They begin an underground snack business to win back customers and also prove that fusion cafes are not necessarily better than the original. The two boys are so devastated that they become desperate enough to work together and save their families’ livelihoods. Even though Theo sees the cafe as his chance to attend college, and Gabriel, the bakery as his future, both families ultimately decide to sell their shops when a new fusion restaurant opens and steals away customers. The food rivalry naturally pits the two boys against each other, especially as both restaurants are failing, both their families blame each other, and Gabriel’s horrendous soccer skill have cost Theo and their team too many matches. Gabriel Moreno: a closeted teen whose family is about to close the only Puerto Rican bakery in town. What did you like about the book?
